Google Chrome using lots of bandwidth

Postby mpitt » Wed May 02, 2012 3:31 pm

There have been a number of reports since the middle of April about Google Chrome using up lots of bandwidth. It would appear that in the background it's precaching web sites. In some cases are using 30GB a month in bandwidth.

1) Type: chrome://flags/ into the address bar and disable the option:
Prerender from omnibox Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS. Enables prerendering of suggestions from the Omnibox and predicts appropriate network actions (prerendering, Instant, DNS preconnect) by calculating a confidence value for each Omnibox result.

2) Go to Chrome settings and click on "Under the Bonnet" and disable "Predict network actions to improve page load performance".

May I also suggest to lower extraneous bandwidth;
From the same (2 above) page remove the tick from;
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google
Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed(unless of course you are happy with google knowing what pages you used FF/Opera/IE etc. to look at and possibly what docs you read on the HDD.)

Good spot.

Seeing as Chrome is my browser flavour at the moment, handy to know about the misc bandwidth usage.

Cheers guys

I already had everything except the prerender option disabled, so thank you for letting me know about that.
