Apple's iPhone iTunes ID set-up demand

Postby Hegemony » Thu Jun 14, 2007 11:33 am

Apple will require iPhone customers to have an active iTunes Store account, in order to set-up their device, the company has revealed.

Apple despatched an email to US customers who had signed-up for information when the iPhone ships last night. The email describes a number of features to the product, and warns prospective customers that they should open an iTunes account.

A wave of US reports questioned why this ID is required, but given the iTunes application's increasing status for managing more than just music, it's likely to be predicated on the basis that many users will want to play iTunes purchase on the iPhone.

It's also possible that Apple wants to ensure a certain level of security for user's data, address book contacts, images and other information that shall be carried by the iPhone - and passed across to that device from within iTunes.

Some reports predict that the requirement of an iTunes account may cause problems when the first wave of iPhone customers try to buy their phones, as AT&T employees may not be fully aware of the requirement. They anticipate some problems setting up the device initially as a result.

The email also offers some other tidbits as to iPhone operation, as disclosed by iLounge.

It confirms the device will be able to take contact information from Address Book, Entourage, Outlook, Outlook Express, or Yahoo! Address Book, and grab shedule reminders from iCal, Entourage, or Outlook. Users will also be able to enter contacts directly.

being locked into iTunes to use a phone, mmmm no thanks Apple I think I'll pass on that one

I currently have an O2 XDA Exec (aka HTC Universal) and my contract is up for renewal in August so I'm looking around for upgrades or alternatives. I'll be getting one of these three phones instead of an iPhone.

HTC Touch

I've seen the HTC Touch in a number of reviews and I am quite impressed with it. HTC are aiming more at the thumb/finger to operate the touchscreen rather than a stylus and that is what "TouchFLO" is. The effect of spinning around to the next pane of buttons is exactly like the compiz/Beryl 3D cube on Linux. Here is a good video on BBC News showing it off.
My main problem with it is that it only has a QVGA screen (240x320) and is tri-band (900/1800/1900). It doesn't have 3G/UMTS so the data rate will be sickeningly slow.

XDA Flame

The O2 XDA Flame is a definite possibility IMO. It has a full VGA (480x640) screen, nVidia graphics, SRS surround sound and 2GB of memory on board. It also has wifi (b & g) and tri-band WITH 3G (900/1800/1900/2100). This minisite has more detail about it
This is one of 2 phones that I consider an upgrade or improvement on my XDA Exec.

Eten Glofiish X800

Another phone that I'm considering is the E-Ten glofiish X800.
This is another VGA screen with quad-band support and 3G/UTMS. It doesn't have all the fancy graphics or surround sound of the Flame, but it DOES have a GPS aerial built into it. It will also be running Windows Mobile 6 if that makes any difference to people. This site here has a run-down of the specs

Satnav is one of the main uses for my current phone so GPS capability rates highly on my list. In the end, it is going to come down to availability and pricing for my choice. If O2 can do me a good price on the Flame, then I'll be considering it otherwise it's likely to be the X800.
